CD 18 - Theme Announcement
It's been a while coming, but perhaps the oldest and most used theme of all songs it coming to the CD consortium - LOVE
CD 17 - SPIR17UAL17Y - Results
And
the winner of Best Track is …
*dramatic
pause*
*needless
further pause*
*really
annoying extended pause*
Pete
Hodgson’s
track Closer To Fine by Indigo Girls with a score of 120 points!
This is quite some score. Congratulations Pete on a first time win – you’d best
get thinking of the next theme.
In
silver medal position is Allan with Take Me To Church by Hozier,
which scored 98 points.
Bronze
goes to Katja for God Song by Bad Religion, scoring 90
points.
Shall
we get the wooden spoon out of the way? This isn’t going to do his persecution
complex any good at all because the winner of the wooden spoon is, once again, Jasper
with Papa Don’t Preach by Madonna which managed to score only 18
points. To be fair, it was a strong field.
Jasper was also picked out the
most times with 12 people correctly identifying his track. Also, it must be
borne in mind that this is out of 14 people who had a go at saying who put on
what. Although, to be fair, there was a small element of surprise in Jasper’s
track selection because as soon as the theme was announced, most people seemed
to think that he would go for Like A Prayer by Madonna, so maybe
that’s what foxed the two people who didn’t identify him?
The
cloak and dagger award for avoiding detection completely is shared between
three people this time round, Simon, Howard and Allan.
So
on to who guessed who …
Well
we have three joint winners in this. Neil, Rob and Mick Lewus,
identifying 7 contributors correctly (including themselves).

SPIT17UAL17Y - My Track Considerations
OK - there are a few tracks I was considering for the CD (as always) and some I would like to share even though they didn't make it in the end.
First is Great Dreams Of Heaven by Ian Mcnabb:
Well this would have qualified for several reasons - firstly, it's got 'heaven' in the title, but then it's a list song (which was a possible theme), and also mentions 'football' and so would have qualified for the last theme too. It was written several years ago, but some of the phrases resonate and relevant in today's uneasy international times.
Then Just Like Heaven by The Cure:
No further explanation needed for this one really - great track.
Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones
I've not listened to this live version but embedding of the album track has been disabled (the one I tried to link). This is one of my favourite Stones tracks - I'm not a mega-fan but I love this song. Listening now as I type this, it doesn't quite have the same quality as the album track which builds really nicely. It was probably the first track that came to mind when the theme was announced.
Don't Look Down - The Divine Comedy
I came so so close to putting this track on the CD. Firstly anything by 'The Divine Comedy' would obviously qualify for the theme. Secondly, they are probably still my favourite band. Thirdly, this is on of my favourites of theirs and exemplary of the kind of song which made me love the band in the first place. Fourthly and by no means least importantly, it contains a bit of a poke at established Christian views of God and religion - and then there's the ominous warning at the very end 'DON'T LOOK DOWN'.
Other notable mentions are:
Godless by The Dandy Warhols
Demon In Profile - The Afghan Whigs
American Jesus - Bad Religion

Congratulations go to Neil for the best track of CD
16 The Distance by Cake with a score of 113 points.
Second place goes to Bob for Gameshow by Two
Door Cinema Club scoring 94 points and just pipping Simon’s Nightswimming
by CD club regulars R.E.M. which scored 93 points.
On to ‘who put on what’ and Pete H looked set to return to form guessing, 6 contributors correctly, alongside Pete K (is this a Pete thing? *checks Pete Q* *sees score of 5* maybe it is!) but then a last-minute dip at the finish line saw Neil edge to victory, correctly identifying 7 contributors! So, a double victory for Neil.
Unsurprisingly, Pete ‘anything with a mandolin or by the Pogues or both’ Quin was picked out the most times (8). This means that there are 5 guessers who still haven’t sussed out Pete’s tastes? What’s wrong with you people? Also, what’s wrong with the people who didn’t guess that it was Katja who put on ‘Tour De France’ by the German group Kraftwerk who Katja went to watch this summer, and who also went to watch the start of the ‘Tour de France’?
Avoiding detection completely this time round were: Sam,
Rob and Pete K.
